Summer Savory (Satureja hortensis)

Summer savory belongs to the mint family. It is a strongly aromatic annual originating from south-eastern Europe. It grows to a height of 30 cm, flowers with tiny blooms from July to September and is grown mainly as a culinary herb.

Use in the kitchen

It suits pulses, potatoes, spreads, cured meats and vegetables, especially cabbage and kale. It is also used in herb butter and sauces.

How to grow

  • It needs a sunny position. It copes with drought, but the soil must not be waterlogged.
  • Sow the seeds directly at the final position in shallow, moist rows about 30 to 35 cm apart, or in pots by the window.
  • A loose, warm, sandy loam soil is suitable.
  • The pot must have a hole in the bottom for water to drain.
  • The flowering foliage and leaves are harvested. Savory does not lose its aroma when dried.

The pack contains 350 seeds.
