Garden parsley (lat. Petroselium crispum) is a biennial herb. In the first year, it only forms a rosette of basal leaves, and only in the second year does a hollow, branched flower stem grow in the upper part, reaching up to 1 meter in height. The main taproot is usually simple or only slightly branched, spindle-shaped. The leaves of natural forms are lobed, triangular in outline, but through breeding, a number of forms have emerged with deeply divided and variously curled leaves. The fruits are schizocarps. The most commonly used part of the plant is the root, which is harvested in the year of sowing in autumn or early in the following spring. After thorough washing and cutting, it is dried or stored in a cool cellar, preferably in sand. The fruits are harvested in the second year after flowering, i.e. in August, the herb is collected in July and August. There are two cultivars: Leaf parsley and Root parsley.

Use of Parsley in Cosmetics

Parsley is also used in medicine. It is an irreplaceable diuretic drug that also has anti-rheumatic and draining effects. However, drinking parsley infusions too frequently is dangerous because apiol contained in the essential oil is toxic and damages the kidneys in larger quantities. Otherwise, parsley is most commonly used as a root vegetable. The roots, herbs and fruits of parsley contain essential oils. Depending on the origin of the plants, the essential oil has different compositions and may contain myristicin, apiol or allytetramethoxybenzene. Parsley herb also contains vitamin C. In case of increased sweating and impure acne-prone skin, it is recommended to drink a cup of parsley infusion three times a day. The infusion is prepared so that 10 g of roots to 100 g of water. The infusion is drunk two days a week. Parsley promotes excretion and cleanses the skin. However, grated root or herb should not be added to vegetable masks, because parsley essential oil causes inflammation, swelling and rashes when in direct contact with the skin.

Be careful with parsley! In larger quantities, it can damage the kidneys!
