Chenopodium capitatum

A forgotten vegetable! The leaves can be treated like spinach. The fruits are beautifully red, resemble raspberries and have a pleasantly fresh taste! It grows to about 60 cm in height. After fruiting, it becomes very decorative. The leaves are used in salads and spreads, dressings, for meats, etc. They are rich in minerals, trace elements, vitamins A, C, K. After flowering, the plant produces aromatic red fruits. The fruits can be eaten raw, mashed with sugar and topped with milk, added to yoghurts, dressings, jellies, cakes, pancakes, etc. Both leaves and fruits can be frozen, and fruits can be preserved or used for marmalades and jams.

Strawberry spinach can be grown in beds and in containers, pots by the window, on balconies and terraces. It can be grown year-round indoors!

How to Grow Strawberry Spinach

  • During the summer period, it requires abundant watering; in winter, when grown indoors, watering should be reduced. It must be grown in partial shade so that the leaves remain deep green and juicy.

  • Mix the seeds with fine sand and sow into moist, well-drained soil to a depth of approx. 1-2 cm. Once the seedlings are large enough, they can be thinned out. When planting outdoors, plant at a distance of approx. 15 cm apart.

Strawberry spinach can be sown from March to July for fruit. For leaves, it can be sown until September!

  • The plants thrive in nutrient-rich, moderately moist soil.

  • Fertilize only during the growing season. Water-soluble fertilizers such as Cererit or Kristalon are suitable. Fertilize every 3 weeks.

  • The plant may be attacked by aphids. When grown in the garden, there is a risk of damage from slugs.

  • Harvest time is from July to October.
