In brief: Marjoram essential oil (Origanum majorana) smells warm, herbal and slightly spicy. It traditionally belongs in evening and massage blends for relaxation. For a diffuser 3–4 drops, on the skin 1–2%. Do not use it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

|---|---|

| Main components | terpinen-4-ol, cis-sabinene hydrate, terpinenes, terpinolene, sabinene |
| Scent | warm, herbal, sweetly spicy, slightly woody |
| Dilution | 1–2%: 2–4 drops per 10 ml, 6–12 drops per 30 ml |
| Safety | standard: not in pregnancy, children only from 6 years of age |
You have marjoram in the kitchen as a seasoning for potato soup, but the essential oil from it is one of the gentlest herbal oils of all. It does not have the sharpness of mint or the camphor hardness of rosemary. It smells warm, a little like freshly dried herb and a little like tea, and that is why in aromatherapy it is traditionally used mainly in the evening.
Just beware of confusion. Under the name "Spanish marjoram" a completely different plant is sold, the thyme Thymus mastichina, with a high proportion of 1,8-cineole. This article is about true sweet marjoram, which we have on offer.
Sweet marjoram or "Spanish"?
| Sweet marjoram | "Spanish marjoram" | |
|---|---|---|
| Latin name | Origanum majorana | Thymus mastichina |
| Main components | terpinen-4-ol, sabinene hydrate | 1,8-cineole, linalool |
| Scent | warm, sweetly herbal | sharper, eucalyptus-like |
| Typical use | evening and massage blends | "breathing" blends, adults only |
The composition of sweet marjoram changes with the place and season of harvest. In marjoram grown in Egypt, where our BIO marjoram oil also comes from, scientists measured terpinen-4-ol from roughly 16% in winter to 37% in summer and a large proportion of cis-sabinene hydrate. That is why the scent of individual batches may differ slightly.
What marjoram goes with
Marjoram is a "middle note" and holds blends together well. Proven combinations:
- Lavender – the most classic evening pair.
- Orange or bergamot – they brighten it and add sweetness.
- Himalayan cedar – a woody base in autumn and winter.
- Chamomile – a gentle blend for the bedroom.
Use: diffuser, massage, bath
| Use | Adult dose | Remark |
|---|---|---|
| Diffuser | 3–4 drops per 100 ml of water | in the evening 30–60 minutes before bed, then switch off |
| Aroma lamp | 3 drops in a bowl of water | do not leave the candle burning unattended |
| Massage oil | 2%: 4 drops per 10 ml, 12 drops per 30 ml | for the back, neck, calves |
| Bath | 4 drops in a spoonful of carrier oil or cream | never pure oil into the water |
| Compress | 2 drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil, rub in, then a warm towel | not on broken skin |
How to adjust the number of drops to the size of the room is set out in the article how many drops of essential oil to put in a diffuser and aroma lamp.
Massage oil for a stiff back: method
- Drip 6 drops of marjoram, 4 drops of lavender and 2 drops of Himalayan cedar into 30 ml of jojoba oil (2% in total).
- Close the bottle and turn it upside down several times; do not shake unnecessarily long.
- When using it for the first time, test the blend on a small area of skin.
- Apply roughly a teaspoon to the back and neck and massage for 5–10 minutes.
- Use up the blend within 3 months and keep it in a dark bottle.
Three diffuser blends
- Calm evening: 2 drops of marjoram, 2 drops of lavender, 1 drop of orange.
- Autumn living room: 2 drops of marjoram, 2 drops of orange, 1 drop of cedar.
- Bedroom: 2 drops of marjoram, 1 drop of chamomile, 2 drops of lavender. Switch it off before falling asleep.
Traditional use and research
In folk medicine of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, marjoram was traditionally used for digestive problems, headaches and muscle tension, mostly as a tea or a spice. In aromatherapy it is traditionally classed among the calming oils and is added to evening blends and massages. Review papers summarise laboratory studies with antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, but clinical evidence for specific therapeutic effects is lacking. We offer it for aromatherapy and external use, not for internal use. If you are looking for oils for an evening routine, compare it with the five in the article essential oils for relaxation and sleep.
Safety
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: marjoram is traditionally credited with an influence on menstruation and the review literature recommends not using the oil in pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Leave it out.
- Children: under 6 years of age rather reach for lavender or chamomile, which our guide essential oils and children recommends for the smallest. From 6 years of age, marjoram in a diffuser 1–2 drops, on the skin 1% at most.
- Skin: the oil is generally well tolerated, but oxidised (old, badly stored) oil may irritate. Always dilute it; undiluted it does not belong on the skin.
- Cats: as with all essential oils: do not run the diffuser in a room the cat cannot leave, and do not put the oil on its fur. More in the article essential oils and pets.
- Storage: dark glass, a cool place and a tightly closed cap. Use up an opened oil within roughly 2 years.
How to recognise a quality marjoram oil
The label should say Origanum majorana, not just "marjoram". If you read Thymus mastichina there, it is "Spanish marjoram" with a different composition. Also look for the country of origin (Egypt, France, Hungary), the method of extraction (steam distillation of the herb) and the batch. The colour is clear to pale yellow, the scent warm and sweet, not sharply eucalyptus-like.

Frequently asked questions
What is marjoram essential oil used for?
Most often in evening blends in a diffuser and in massage oils for a stiff back and neck. It is traditionally classed among the calming oils. It is not a medicine and therapeutic effects are not clinically proven.
Can marjoram oil be used during pregnancy?
No. Marjoram is traditionally credited with an influence on menstruation, and the specialist literature recommends leaving the oil out during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
What is the difference between marjoram and oregano?
Both are from the genus Origanum, but oregano oil contains a lot of carvacrol, is sharp and irritates the skin strongly. Marjoram is gentler and suits massages and evening blends. Do not interchange them in recipes.
Which oils should marjoram be combined with?
Best with lavender, orange, bergamot, chamomile and cedar. Marjoram usually makes up a third to a half of the blend.
