Growing Marjoram

The basis of every successful growing is choosing a suitable location. For marjoram we choose a sunny spot with warm soil. Ideal is permeable soil with sufficient nutrients. If nutrients are lacking, we should occasionally fertilize the plants during the growing season, preferably with organic fertilizers.

We sow either at the end of April directly in the bed, or during April in pots in a warm bright room for pre-growing seedlings.

We cover the seeds with a fine layer of soil or substrate. Pre-grown seedlings are planted in the bed in the second half of May.

We can grow plants in pairs, leaving 10-20 cm spacing between pairs.

We can also grow marjoram in a pot so that we always have it fresh and at hand. It only requires sufficient light.

Use in the Kitchen

We add marjoram to food only at the end of cooking or directly to the finished dish. We use only the leaves, which we strip from the stem.

Marjoram is popular for flavoring soups and meat dishes. It's especially excellent for goulash, liver and game, it can season sauces, salads and thanks to its ability to support digestion also fatty and legume dishes. It's part of many spice mixtures, it combines excellently with pepper, thyme, savory, sage, caraway or rosemary.

We can use fresh or dried marjoram equally well. For longer storage, we dry it spread out or in bunches in the shade at a maximum temperature of 40°C. The dried herb should not turn brown, but retain its greenish color.
We store it in paper bags or glass containers without access to air for a maximum of 1 year.
