Mellisa officinalis

This perennial aromatic herb originates from the Mediterranean region. It has a branched stem 40 to 60 cm long, sometimes growing up to 100 cm in height. It flowers from June to August. The flowers are white, appearing in the leaf axils. The entire plant has its characteristic lemon scent, especially before flowering.

It stimulates appetite. Fresh and young lemon balm leaves are suitable for flavoring vegetable salads, herb sauces, butter and cocktails. It is undemanding to grow. It can be grown not only in the garden, but also in containers on the terrace, or in winter behind a window, where it is always within reach.

How to Grow Lemon Balm

  • Requires a sunny location, tolerates partial shade. At midday, the plant should be protected from direct sun exposure. Requires constantly moist soil. Mulching around the plant is advisable, the soil stays moist longer. In winter, heap brushwood or leaves around the plant.

  • Sow seeds from March to May in containers and place behind a window. Seeds germinate in 21-28 days at a temperature of 20°C. In mid-May, transplant into open soil or continue growing in pots.

  • The plant requires well-draining, loamy-sandy growing substrate.

  • Lemon balm does not require regular fertilizing. For better growth, it can be fertilized once a month with water-soluble fertilizer in liquid form. A suitable fertilizer is, for example, Cererit.

  • The plant does not suffer from pests or diseases.

  • Pick leaves as needed. Young leaves contain more essential oils and are more aromatic.
