Radish is a wonderful vegetable with a delicate to pungent flavour. Nothing compares to it.

Radish - Queen of Autumn Gardens

Where Does It Actually Come From?

White radish is an unassuming yet highly popular vegetable among food lovers. Its benefits were already appreciated by the ancient Egyptians, from where it originates - the Mediterranean. It's also mentioned in Rome and Greece. From there, it was just a short journey to our regions, where it appeared in the second half of the 18th century.

How Should We Classify It?

Radish is the queen of autumn gardens. It belongs to the Brassicaceae family, closely resembling carrots, differing only in color and taste. White radish can grow up to 35 centimeters, some varieties even reaching 40 centimeters. It's a spicy and crispy vegetable that perfectly complements almost any dish!

How to Grow It?

Radish isn't particularly demanding to grow. It mainly needs deeply worked soil, plenty of moisture, and above all - sunshine! It's not recommended to plant it in shaded corners of gardens or partial shade. Winter varieties of radish are planted in July and August and harvested in autumn and winter, with a growing period of 120 days - just calculate everything accordingly! Of course, it depends on weather and soil conditions!

Advantages of Radish

Radish has many advantages, with its specific taste being the most appealing! This vegetable has very juicy flesh, with a delicate yet pungent flavor! Radish contains a large amount of vitamin C, acting as prevention against colds during autumn and winter months. Moreover, it contains a high proportion of calcium and important vitamin B!

How to Prepare It?

Radish has wide culinary applications, though it's a shame it's not used much in local gastronomy. It's important to thoroughly clean and peel the radish before consumption - never eat it with the skin on, as it would be hard on your stomach! It's excellent in cottage cheese spreads, reducing the need for much salt since radish contains plenty. It's also wonderful in salads, where it has the broadest use! The most sought-after combination is with beetroot!

A Few More Pluses

White radish works almost like chewing gum, balancing pH in the mouth and improving digestion! Its consumption is not recommended for those with stomach ulcers - be careful!!!

In short, the era of small red radishes is over!
