This ancient plant is an annual or biennial plant. It grows up to 50 cm. The plant is cultivated for its fleshy root in various shapes and colors. It can be black, white or brown. Radishes contain more water, carbohydrates and fiber in their roots than small radishes. The root is a rich source of magnesium, potassium, calcium and sulfur. The plant has significant dietary effects and a spicier taste. It has many vitamins. Radishes can be consumed raw whole or grated, salted, or drizzled with oil or lemon and left to rest. They are also good as a warm side dish, while young leaves are processed like spinach.
Plants are ideal for cooler areas. To prevent root cracking, it is advisable to limit soil moisture fluctuations through watering. During vegetation, we remove weeds from the beds and carefully hoe them. Radishes require regular watering. The soil should never dry out. Sunny location.
Spring varieties are sown in March and April in beds at 30×10 cm spacing. Harvesting is possible at the end of May.
Summer varieties are sown at the turn of April and May at 30×15 cm spacing. Harvesting is possible in June or July.
Winter varieties are sown at 30×20 cm spacing at the turn of June and July. Harvesting is possible at the turn of October and November.
Seeds are sown to a depth of 2 cm.
For growing radishes, permeable, light to medium-heavy, deeply worked soil that is rich in humus and has sufficient soil moisture is suitable.
We do not fertilize radishes with farmyard manure. They would accumulate nitrates, which are dangerous for the human body. We do not fertilize radishes during vegetation. It is advisable to use them as a pre-crop.
In overcrowded sowings, there is a risk of fungal disease attack on seedling collars known as damping-off. The affected collar turns brown and the plants die. We establish sparse sowing and maintain only moderate moisture.
Irregular watering is related to bulb cracking, which develops, for example, during rains after a long period of drought.
Root flies, whose larvae form tunnels in the root heads, are a significant pest of radishes. Non-woven fabric will prevent root flies from laying eggs on radish root collars. For chemical protection, it is advisable to use Sumithion Super. Regular watering also prevents flea beetle attacks, which nibble on leaves.
We harvest radishes as needed when they are ripe. Harvest is determined by variety.
