Annatto tree is a tree originating from tropical regions of the Americas, particularly from the Amazon and Caribbean. It is primarily known for its seeds, which contain an orange-red dye also called bixin. This dye is traditionally used in cooking and food processing as a natural colorant to enhance the color of foods, such as cheeses, sauces, or rice. This plant also has historical uses across various cultures.

Annatto tree is a tree with a characteristic appearance typical of plants growing in tropical environments. The tree's height can vary, but typically ranges between 3 and 10 meters. The leaves of the annatto tree are alternate, leathery, and usually heart-shaped or broadly elliptical. The flowers are small, colored white or pink, and form inflorescences. The fruits are capsules that are usually covered with spines or thorns. Inside these capsules are seeds that are the source of the bixin dye. The seeds are characteristically large and colored orange-red. Overall, the annatto tree has the typical appearance of tropical plants with large leaves and conspicuous flowers and fruits. However, its most remarkable feature is its orange-red seeds, which have practical and aesthetic uses.

1. Seed Preparation: to increase germination rate, soak the seeds for several hours in water. This softens the hard outer layer of the seeds and accelerates their germination.
2. Soil Preparation: annatto tree grows best in well-draining soil with sufficient moisture. It should be nutrient-rich. You can use a mixture of growing medium and compost.
3. Sowing Seeds: moisten the soil slightly and make small holes in which you place the seeds. Cover them with a thin layer of soil.
4. Germination: place the containers with seeds in a warm and bright location, preferably in a greenhouse or under plastic film. Keep the soil moist but don't flood it. Germination should begin within a few weeks.
5. Seedling Care: once the first leaves appear, you can transplant the plants into larger pots. Then keep them in a bright location, preferably in direct sunlight, but protect them from direct midday sun. Keep the soil consistently moist.
6. Transplanting Outdoors: once the plants reach a height of several centimeters and outdoor temperatures are sufficiently high, you can transplant them to a permanent outdoor location. Annatto tree prefers a warm climate without frost. Remember that seedlings may be sensitive to direct sunlight, so protect them from it initially.
7. Mature Plant Care: mature plants can be relatively undemanding to grow. Ensure they have sufficient water, especially during dry periods. If you want to achieve more vigorous flowering and fruiting, regularly fertilize them with fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium.
8. Harvest and Processing: fruits with orange seeds ripen after several months. Once they ripen, you can harvest them and use them for food coloring.
