Raphanus sativus, var. niger - Black Radish

This ancient plant is an annual or biennial species that grows up to 50 cm tall. The plant is cultivated for its fleshy root, which comes in various shapes and colors. It can be black, white, or brown. Radishes contain more water, carbohydrates, and fiber in their roots than small radishes. The root is a rich source of magnesium, potassium, calcium, and sulfur. The plant has significant dietary benefits and a more pungent taste. It is rich in vitamins. Radish can be consumed raw whole or grated, salted, drizzled with oil or lemon, and left to rest. It also makes a good warm side dish, while young leaves can be prepared like spinach.

How to Grow Radishes

  • These plants are ideal for cooler regions. To prevent root cracking, it's advisable to limit soil moisture fluctuations through irrigation. During the growing season, keep beds free of weeds and carefully hoe around them. Radishes require regular watering. The soil should never dry out. Choose a sunny location.

  • Spring varieties are sown in March and April in beds with 30×10 cm spacing. They can be harvested as early as the end of May.

Summer varieties are sown at the end of April and beginning of May with 30×15 cm spacing. They can be harvested in June or July.

Winter varieties are sown with 30×20 cm spacing at the end of June and beginning of July. They can be harvested at the end of October and beginning of November.

Sow seeds at a depth of 2 cm.

  • Well-drained, light to medium-heavy, deeply worked soil rich in humus with sufficient soil moisture is suitable for growing radishes.

  • Do not fertilize radishes with farmyard manure. They would accumulate nitrates, which are dangerous to the human body. Do not fertilize radishes during the growing season. It's advisable to use them as a pre-crop.

  • In overcrowded sowings, there is a risk of fungal disease affecting seedling necks, known as damping-off. The affected neck turns brown and seedlings die. Establish sparse sowings and maintain only moderate moisture.

Root cracking is related to irregular watering and develops, for example, during rainfall after a long dry period.

Cabbage root fly, whose larvae create tunnels in root heads, is a significant pest of radishes. Non-woven fabric will prevent root fly females from laying eggs on radish root necks. For chemical protection, Sumithion Super is suitable. Regular watering also prevents attacks by flea beetles, which nibble on leaves.

  • Harvest radishes as needed when they are ripe. Harvest timing depends on the variety.
