Seed Tape: Salad Meadow - Italian

Chicory is an annual vegetable. In the first year, it forms a turnip-like root and leaf rosette. Its leaves are a tasty addition to vegetable salads.

Radicchio is an Italian relative of chicory. It looks like a small cabbage with firm red-purple leaves. The leaves are crispy and have a very bitter taste.

Arugula has an unusual, hard-to-describe sharper and more pungent taste that can enhance any dish. Excellent in salads or just as a side dish.

Buckhorn plantain is a type of plantain called "buckhorn" also known as Herba Stella.

How to Grow Salad Meadow Seed Tape

• The location should be bright to sunny. Mature plants should be regularly hoed and weeded during the growing season and watered or fertilized if necessary. The soil should never dry out.

• Seed tapes are placed in 1cm deep furrows. Then water them and cover with soil. Keep the seedbed evenly moist.

• Plants require nutritious, humus-rich garden soil.

• Plants respond well to organic fertilizer. Before planting, work matured compost into the soil. During the growing season, it is best to apply water-soluble fertilizers - Cererit, Kristalon - Fruit and Flower.

• The biggest pests for lettuce are wireworms and slugs. Wireworms are larvae of click beetles. The best approach is to plant a few test lettuces in the affected area, let them get infested, and then mechanically remove them along with the larvae. Slugs are also a significant pest for lettuce. Chemical products are not recommended. The best defense is low watering and hand collection. Other pests such as moles, mole crickets, or mice are better repelled mechanically than chemically.

  Bacterial rot of lettuce manifests on leaf edges, where we initially observe sharply defined, dark blackening spots. Often the oldest leaves lying on the soil are affected. The infestation then spreads to younger leaves. Affected post-harvest residues or entire plants must be deeply plowed or removed to prevent increasing the infectious potential of the soil. Treat with Champion WP 50.

  Downy mildew of lettuce appears mainly on older leaves, where light green to yellow-green spots of various sizes form, often bordered by veins. The spots gradually enlarge, merge, dry out and necrotize. Chemical protection consists of seed treatment with Rovral 50 WP, Rovral FLO and Previcur 607 SL.

  With gray mold, affected parts turn yellow and are covered with gray mycelial coatings. It is advisable to treat seeds with Rovral 50 WP. Chemical treatment is carried out with Rovral 50 WP or Rovral FLO.
