The Maidenhair Tree, also known as Ginkgo biloba, is a deciduous tree native to China. It is one of the oldest trees in the world and is often referred to as a "living fossil" because it has existed for more than 270 million years. The Maidenhair Tree has characteristic fan-shaped leaves that turn golden in autumn. It is considered an important ornamental tree that is valued for its appearance. It has unique seeds that are used in cooking as an ingredient for various dishes.

The Maidenhair Tree is a medium-sized tree with a conical crown that grows up to 30 metres in height. Its trunk is robust and scaly, with brown to grey bark. It has characteristically fan-shaped green leaves with distinctive veining. In autumn, the leaves turn a beautiful golden to yellow shade. The Maidenhair Tree produces cones that contain seeds enclosed in a fleshy coating. The seeds are yellow to orange in colour and peach-shaped. Overall, the Maidenhair Tree is a very elegant tree with typical bilobed leaves and ornamental appearance.

1. Rinsing seeds: rinse the seeds with water and remove any fleshy coating.
2. Seed stratification: prepare the seeds for germination by stratification. Place the seeds for 2 to 3 months in a moist environment with a temperature of around 4°C. This mimics natural winter conditions and helps the seeds germinate better.
3. Substrate preparation: prepare a suitable substrate containing a mixture of peat, sand and garden soil. Make sure it is sufficiently permeable and drains water well.
4. Sowing seeds: plant the stratified seeds in substrate in suitable pots. Cover them with a thin layer of substrate.
5. Watering: keep the substrate moderately moist but not waterlogged. Water carefully so as not to damage the germinating seeds.
6. Location and temperature: place the seedlings in a warm and sunny spot. The Maidenhair Tree prefers well-lit locations, but do not expose it to direct sunlight.
7. Seedling care: monitor seedling growth and keep the substrate moist. Gradually expose them to more sunlight.
8. Transplanting: once the seedlings have grown and developed sufficiently strong roots, transplant them to a permanent outdoor location or into larger pots.
9. Plant care: water regularly, keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged. The Maidenhair Tree is resistant to most pests and diseases, but regularly check and remove wilted parts.
