How to choose an oil for your diffuser

Most essential oils are suitable for an aroma diffuser. What matters most is the scent you want in the room and the size of the space you are scenting. The scent note and intensity we state for every Pěstík oil will help you choose.

By scent

Citrus – light and fresh: lemon, grapefruit, orange, mandarin, lime or the grassy, lemony lemongrass.
Floral – fuller and sweeter: lavender, ylang ylang, geranium, and among the herbal ones with a floral touch, palmarosa.
Herbal – green and fresh: peppermint, rosemary, tea tree, cajeput.
Woody and coniferous – foresty and dry: pine, silver fir, Himalayan cedarwood, palo santo, and the fresh, camphoraceous eucalyptus.
Spicy and resinous – warm and deep: cinnamon, cardamom, frankincense.

By room

For a smaller room or a study, choose gentler and medium scents and fewer drops. Use very intense oils such as cinnamon, peppermint or lemongrass sparingly and feel free to combine them with a gentler oil. In a living room or a larger space you can go for a more distinctive scent, as citrus oils disperse quickly there. In bedrooms and children's rooms, scent only briefly and air the room beforehand.

By time of day and occasion

In the morning and during the day, reach for citrus or herbal oils, which come across as a fresh, light scent. In the evening many people prefer fuller scents: flowers, wood or resins. In autumn and winter, spicy blends with orange are popular, while in summer light citrus and mint are the favourites. Before guests arrive or after cooking, a short burst of scent is enough; the scent does not need to linger for hours.

How many drops to use

The number of drops depends on your diffuser's instructions, the size of the water tank and the size of the room. As a general rule, start with a smaller amount, let the diffuser run for a while and only then add more if needed. Intense oils need a smaller dose than gentle ones. After an hour, switch the diffuser off and air the room; the scent then feels more pleasant than with continuous operation.

Diffuser or aroma lamp?

An ultrasonic diffuser disperses the oil together with a fine water mist and works without a flame, so you can leave it running in a room you are not in at the moment (always according to the manufacturer's instructions). Many models have a timer and switch off automatically when the water runs out. An aroma lamp warms water with oil over a tealight: the scent is softer and the lamp works without electricity, but you must never leave the candle unattended. Both methods suit the same oils; the difference lies mainly in convenience and in how strongly the scent fills the space.

Cleaning your diffuser

Essential oils leave a thin film in the tank, which can affect the scent of the next fill as well as the way the diffuser works. After each use, pour out the remaining water and wipe the tank with a dry cloth. Roughly once a week, or when you change scents, rinse the tank with clean water, possibly with a little vinegar, and gently wipe the ultrasonic plate with a cotton bud. Always follow the diffuser manufacturer's instructions and unplug it before cleaning.

Scent pairings

Think of a blend as a fragrance composition that you can adjust to your liking. Oils from neighbouring scent families usually go well together. A few tips to get you started:

Citrus freshness – orange + grapefruit + a drop of lime.
Forest walk – pine + silver fir + rosemary.
Floral evening – lavender + orange + a drop of ylang ylang.
Winter spice – orange + cinnamon + cardamom.
Wood and resin – Himalayan cedarwood + frankincense + mandarin.

Adjust the ratio of drops in a blend to the intensity of each oil: use less of a very intense oil and more of a gentle one. Try a new combination with a small number of drops first to see whether you like it before you fill the whole tank. Once you find a favourite ratio, write it down so you can easily repeat it next time. Only put essential oils in the diffuser, never carrier oils or fragrance oils with an oily base, which could damage it.

Safety around pets and children

Cats break down essential oils poorly, so do not run a diffuser or aroma lamp in a room the cat cannot leave. Citrus oils, tea tree, eucalyptus, mint and conifer oils are particularly risky for cats. With dogs, small mammals and birds, always give the animal the option to leave, scent only briefly and ventilate. For children and pregnant or breastfeeding women, use oils only after consulting a specialist, and keep the bottles and the diffuser out of children's reach.

If you prefer the classic method with a candle, take a look at our aroma lamps, where 2–4 drops are usually enough. All oils in this selection belong to our Pěstík BIO essential oil range in 10 ml bottles, bottled in the Czech Republic. You will find our full range of oils in the Essential oils category.

Frequently asked questions

How many drops of essential oil should I put in a diffuser?

Follow your diffuser's instructions and consider the size of the room. Start with fewer drops and add more if needed; intense oils need fewer.

Can I put several oils in the diffuser at once?

Yes, blends of two to three oils are common. Use fewer drops of the more intense oil so that it does not overpower the scent.

How often should I clean the diffuser?

After each use, pour out the water and wipe the tank. Clean it more thoroughly according to the manufacturer's instructions roughly once a week or when you change the scent.

Is a diffuser safe if we have a cat?

Cats break down essential oils poorly. Only run the diffuser where the cat can leave, briefly and with ventilation; citrus oils, tea tree, eucalyptus, mint and conifer oils are risky for them.

Are carrier oils suitable for a diffuser?

No. Only essential oils belong in a diffuser. Carrier oils are oily and are used for dilution when applying oils to the skin.
