Chilean Puya - Original and Eye-Catching

Chilean Puya (lat. Puya chilensis) belongs to the bromeliad family, pineapple family (lat. Bromeliaceae) - this family includes perennial herbs, succulents and some species of low shrubs. Typical for this family are leaves growing in rosettes, which help with water retention, especially in succulents. These rosettes can be located at ground level as well as at the top of the plant. The leaves of these plants are simple, sessile, often leathery. They are mostly arranged spirally. The fruit of these plants is a capsule or berry. A representative of this family is, for example, the pineapple. Approximately 50 genera and 1,700 species are known.

You can enthusiastically grow Chilean Puya - an ornamental plant up to 2 metres tall, which has beautiful and original inflorescence and will be a decoration for your terrace or conservatory.

Chilean Puya is a terrestrial plant from the bromeliad family. This family also includes, for example, lianas. It grows on the arid slopes of Chile, hence its species name Chilean. Chilean Puya is an undemanding perennial. It creates large, dense grey-green rosettes, with leaves edged with curved spines. These serve to prevent herbivorous grazers from reaching the centre of the plant. The flowers of Puya are in clusters that look like a medieval mace on the plant. The flowers resemble the spikes of a mace. Puya is a very hardy and perennial plant.

If it thrives well, it can create an entire colony of plants on its own. Chilean Puya grows very slowly. It can gradually grow for up to twenty years.

If you're thinking about revitalising your plant collection, then Puya is an original and beautiful choice. It is a hardy plant, suitable for growing in indoor conditions, conservatories, and halls.

In summer, it's possible to take Puya out onto the terrace. Its large magnificent inflorescence is suitable for any interior. It can also be placed in company lobbies, hotels and receptions. It is representative and always attracts attention and is memorable. That's the company, the hotel with magnificent flowers at reception. It can help initiate conversation topics.

What you need to prepare for cultivation

Puya chilensis - growing this plant is not demanding at all. Place the seeds into prepared substrate - suitable for germinating indoor plants, or into peat pellets. Protect seedlings from direct sun, although the mature plant itself loves a sunny location. It also thrives in partial shade, away from direct midday sun.

Substrate - grow it in gravelly substrate. For example, for succulents. Place clay pebbles or another drainage layer such as small stones at the bottom of the pot. Room temperature suits it well, even during germination, no covering is necessary, nor is it necessary to heat the substrate. In the wild, it grows high in the Andes mountains. It is therefore a very hardy and undemanding plant to grow.

In Chile, this species grows in the following conditions, depending on altitude:
Coastal mountains, 500 - 2000 m above sea level
Coastal areas, 0-500 m above sea level

Fertilizing and watering - the plant obtains nutrients mainly from air humidity and rain, also from dead insects, animal droppings and plants, etc. With its spiny leaves, it kills small insects and animals, which later serve as fertilizer. They need higher air humidity. Misting suits them well. On dry days, you can mist daily.

During winter - at lower temperatures, it is advisable to reduce watering of Puya to a minimum. Water sporadically, only when the substrate has completely dried out. It is better to let it overwinter indoors at room temperature, although this plant is frost-resistant, with stated temperatures from -20°C to -6°C depending on the age and strength of the plant. However, it belongs to hardiness zone 10-11, which means it cannot tolerate freezing. The temperature should not drop below plus 2°C.

The plant is at full strength between 8-12 years. If you want to pamper your Puya, overwinter it at lower temperatures, but indoors, or move it to a greenhouse, and in spring it will reward you with quickly set flowers, which are already in April to May in hundreds in flower spikes.

Chilean Puya - Interesting Facts

This was due to the sharp thorns on the curved leaves, which could injure animals while eating them, and thus the plant could kill them. If they died nearby, the plant had nutrients from their bodies for its growth.

Fibres from Puya leaves are used for weaving fishing nets. The natural environment for Puya growth is arid, not a humid tropical forest. But rocky forest edges, along paths, on dry arid slopes. Dried plants can be highly flammable and are susceptible to damage by fires that arise from carelessness and failure to follow fire-making rules in nature by people.
