Lupinus polyphyllus - mix

Originally from North America. It grows up to 130 cm tall and has a strong taproot underground. The leaves are palmately divided with 9 to 15 lanceolate leaflets. The flower spike can be up to 50 centimeters long. Plants begin flowering after mid-June. Cultivated lupine varieties have a diverse range of pastel colors: white, pink, yellow, salmon, red, blue, and purple for single-color cultivars, many with individual flowers combined with white.

A group of colorful lupines is hard to miss. They look beautiful in loose groups and on mixed borders, where they combine well with lower, later-flowering perennials. They pair excellently with autumn irises and columbine. They are suitable for cutting.

How to Grow Lupine

  • Requires a sunny location. Water regularly and hoe around the plants. Caution: in winter, it dislikes waterlogging! Regularly loosen the soil around the plants.

  • Sow seeds from April to June directly in the location. Press 1 to 2 cm deep into the soil. The ideal germination temperature is 15 degrees. Germination usually takes 14 - 20 days.

  • The soil should be permeable, nutritious, deep, and calcium-free. They need slightly acidic soil pH.

  • Fertilize plants regularly. Suitable application is in the form of liquid fertilizer with Kristalon or Cererit. It is also possible to spread slow-release granulated fertilizer.

  • Plants may be affected by molds such as gray mold or powdery mildew. It is advisable to keep plants dry and avoid watering the leaves. Treatment with special fungicides is recommended.
