The royal palm comes from southern Florida, Mexico and Central America. In tropical regions it is grown as an ornamental palm. It can reach a height of up to 30 m and a trunk diameter of up to 40 cm. The trunk is grey-white and looks almost like concrete. The fruits are green, about 15 mm in size, and turn purple as they ripen. The pack contains 4 seeds.
The palm needs a bright, sunny position and sufficient watering; it tolerates waterlogging for a short time and is tolerant of drought. Over winter the temperature should not drop below 15 °C for long periods. It suits a conservatory, a heated greenhouse or a bright flat. Cultivation is demanding.
The seeds are sown all year round. First soak them for at least 3 days in warm water, which you change daily. Then sow them shallowly in a 1:1 mixture of perlite and peat. They germinate in 2–3 months in a constantly moist substrate at a temperature of around 26 °C. Transplant seedlings of about 10 cm into individual pots.
