Native to Mexico, this yucca can reach heights of up to 4 meters. Despite originating from Mexico's warm climate, it is incredibly frost-resistant. It can withstand frosts down to -25 degrees Celsius. The flowers are white, arranged in 60 cm tall panicle-shaped inflorescences. This tree yucca has a magnificent crown formed by clusters of blue-green leaves, 2.5 cm wide and up to 60 cm long.
Plants require both diffused and direct sunlight and regular, yet moderate watering. The substrate should remain consistently slightly moist. During summer months, move plants outdoors to the terrace. They cannot tolerate rain or drafts! In winter, move plants to a cool location. Do not apply fertilizers and reduce watering. If indoor air is dry, mist plants with settled water.
Before sowing, soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. A suitable sowing substrate is a 1:1 mix of peat and sand. Press seeds in gently. Keep substrate consistently slightly moist. Place seedlings in a bright location - diffused light, protected from direct sunlight. Optimal germination temperature is between 20-30°C.
It is advisable to grow plants in special peat substrate specifically designed for palms.
From February to November, apply full fertilizer at least twice monthly, preferably water-soluble. Palm fertilizer can also be used.
Viral spotting manifests as yellow-spotted leaves. Remove affected leaves and treat the plant against aphids, which transmit this viral disease.
Irregularly distributed spots that begin to merge signal leaf spot disease. Remove affected leaves and monitor air humidity.
Grey mold manifests as a green moldy coating on leaves. Remove affected leaves and treat plants with fungicide.
Mealybugs and scale insects can be identified by translucent leaf tissue; under magnification, whitish cylindrical mealybugs are visible, and leaf edges turn brown on heavily infested leaves. Remove heavily infested parts, mist or shower the plant occasionally. It can be treated with mineral oil-based products.
If you discover scale insects on the plant, remove heavily infested leaves. Carefully treat leaves with a cotton swab soaked in edible oil and repeatedly treat with mineral oil-based sprays.
If parts of leaves become unevenly colored white-yellow, especially on the underside of leaves, the plant has been attacked by thrips. Prevention against their occurrence includes misting and lowering room temperature. Sticky traps can be used for catching them.
