Umbrella Tree - Schefflera actinophylla - 9 Seeds

The umbrella tree is an evergreen shrub originating from tropical and subtropical regions. It originally comes from Australia, New Guinea, and Indonesia, but thanks to its decorative nature and exotic appearance, it has been imported and spread to other parts of the world. The umbrella tree has compound leaves that consist of several elongated leaflets and resemble an umbrella shape, which is why it's nicknamed the "umbrella plant". It's popular as an ornamental plant due to its interesting appearance and ability to grow to a considerable height. Given its origin in tropical areas, it prefers warm and humid conditions, but some varieties are hardy even in milder climates. Planting the umbrella tree is suitable not only indoors as a houseplant, but also in gardens and parks.

Umbrella Tree: Plant Appearance Description

The umbrella tree is an evergreen plant that can grow to a height of several meters, making it a suitable decorative addition to interiors, terraces, or gardens in appropriate climatic conditions. The umbrella tree has compound leaves that create an umbrella-like shape. Each leaf can be up to several centimeters long and their color is usually dark green, but some varieties may exhibit color variations, such as red or yellow. Once the plant matures and develops sufficiently, it may produce small flowers that are rather inconspicuous. From an aesthetic perspective, they are not the main reason why this plant is popular for cultivation. After pollination, small berries may form on the plant, which often have a red or black color. Overall, the umbrella tree has a robust and attractive appearance thanks to its foliage and distinctive umbrella-shaped leaves, which give it a tropical touch.

How to Grow an Umbrella Tree?

1. Growing Medium Preparation: for seed germination, it's best to use a quality growing medium that is well-draining. You can use a mixture of peat, perlite, and quality garden soil.

2. Seed Germination: umbrella tree seeds can take a longer time to germinate and their sprouting can be more difficult than other plants. To promote germination, you can soak the seeds for several hours or overnight in water before sowing. Then place the soaked seeds into the growing medium. Cover them with a light layer of substrate and water gently.

3. Ensuring a Humid Environment: after sowing the seeds, cover the container with growing medium and seeds with transparent film or glass to create a greenhouse effect and maintain humidity. The location where the seeds will germinate should be warm (ideally around 20-25°C).

4. Care for Germinating Seeds: regularly check the substrate moisture and make sure it's neither too dry nor too wet. Germinating seeds require constant, but not excessive moisture. Ensure that the container with germinating seeds has enough light, although indirect light is more suitable at this stage than direct sunlight.

5. Care After Germination: once the seeds germinate and seedlings begin to grow, you can gradually reduce the humidity of the environment as the plants strengthen. You can also start gradually transplanting the plants into larger pots with fresh substrate.

6. Gradual Transplanting: as the plants grow, transplant them gradually into larger pots. The umbrella tree prefers slightly acidic and well-draining soil. Some growers recommend adding sand or perlite to the substrate to ensure better drainage.

7. Care for Mature Plants: once the plant reaches sufficient size, provide it with enough light, water it regularly, and occasionally fertilize it with suitable fertilizer.
