Growing Pansies - Humus-Rich, Nutritious Soil, Sunny or Partially Shaded Location, Moderate Watering

Pansies (Viola × wittrockiana) are among the most popular ornamental plants for gardens, balconies, and terraces. Their colorful flowers and long flowering period make them ideal for spring and autumn planting. Successful pansy cultivation requires understanding their basic needs – the right soil, location, and watering regime.

Soil Requirements for Pansies

Pansies thrive in humus-rich and nutritious soil with good drainage. The substrate should be:

  • Permeable – preventing water logging and root rot
  • Rich in organic matter – compost or quality potting soil with peat content
  • Slightly acidic to neutral – pH 6.0-7.0
  • Loose – allowing roots to develop freely

Before planting, work compost or aged manure into the soil. For container growing, use quality substrate for flowering plants with added perlite or vermiculite for better aeration.

Ideal Location for Pansy Growing

Pansies prefer a sunny or partially shaded location. The choice depends on the season and climate:

  • Spring and autumn planting – full sun is ideal, pansies tolerate cooler temperatures and produce abundant flowers
  • Summer growing – prefer partial shade, especially in afternoon hours when intense sunlight can cause wilting
  • Shaded locations – pansies also grow in shade, but flowering is less abundant

Optimal temperatures for pansies range from 10 to 18°C. They tolerate light frosts and are therefore suitable for early spring and late autumn decoration.

Watering Pansies

Moderate watering is key to healthy pansy growth. Overwatering and water logging are among the most common causes of plant failure:

  • Regular watering – keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged
  • Morning watering – allows leaves to dry during the day, reducing disease risk
  • Check soil moisture – water when the top layer of soil is dry to the touch
  • Drainage – containers must have drainage holes to prevent water accumulation

During hot days, pansies may require daily watering, while in cooler periods, watering every 2-3 days is sufficient.

Additional Care Tips

For long-lasting and abundant flowering, follow these recommendations:

  • Remove faded flowers – promotes formation of new buds
  • Regular fertilizing – apply liquid fertilizer for flowering plants every 14 days
  • Protection from pests – watch for aphids and slugs
  • Mulching – helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds

With proper care, pansies will reward you with beautiful colorful blooms from early spring to late autumn.

Focusing on Flowering Time, We Can Grow

Early Violas - they have smaller flowers that bloom in autumn, early spring, or during mild winters

Late Violas - they are also frost-resistant and bloom in spring; if located in a shady position, flowering can extend until September

F1 Hybrids - these varieties, originating from Japan, have medium to large multicoloured flowers, however they are not frost-resistant, and a greenhouse or cool room is suitable for overwintering
