Growing Apple Mint - Humus-Rich Substrate, Sunny Location or Partial Shade, Moderate Watering
Basic Requirements for Growing Apple Mint
Apple mint (Mentha suaveolens) is an undemanding aromatic herb that thrives in various conditions. For successful cultivation, it's essential to provide it with humus-rich substrate, a suitable location with sufficient light, and appropriate watering regime.
Ideal Substrate for Apple Mint
Apple mint prefers nutrient-rich, well-draining soil with high humus content. The substrate should retain moisture but not be waterlogged. An ideal mix consists of:
- Quality garden soil or universal substrate
- Compost or well-rotted manure
- Sand or perlite for better drainage
The soil pH should be neutral to slightly acidic (6.0-7.0). If growing in containers, ensure pots have drainage holes to prevent root rot.
Light Requirements - Sun or Partial Shade
Apple mint is adaptable to light conditions and grows well in both full sun and partial shade. In sunny locations, it develops more intense aroma and denser foliage, while in partial shade it grows slightly more tender leaves.
Optimal conditions include:
- Full sun - at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily
- Partial shade - 3-6 hours of sunlight, ideal in hot climates
- Protection from intense midday sun in very hot regions
Watering Apple Mint
Apple mint requires moderate but regular watering. The substrate should be consistently moist but never waterlogged. Watering frequency depends on weather conditions, location, and substrate type.
Watering guidelines:
- Water when the top layer of soil starts to dry
- During hot summer days, water daily or every other day
- In cooler weather, reduce watering frequency
- Mulching helps retain soil moisture
- Avoid wetting leaves to prevent fungal diseases
Additional Care Tips
Besides basic requirements, apple mint benefits from:
- Regular fertilization during growing season with organic fertilizer
- Pruning to promote bushier growth
- Controlling spread - apple mint can be invasive, consider growing in containers
- Winter protection in colder regions with mulch layer
With proper care including humus-rich substrate, adequate light, and moderate watering, apple mint will reward you with abundant aromatic harvest throughout the season.
Common agrimony loves warmth and light, and can be found growing throughout almost all of Europe, Scandinavia, and North America. In the Czech Republic, it appears more abundantly only in South Moravia, but as a weed it can be spotted across our entire territory along roads, fences, in pastures, and on wasteland.
Healing Properties
Tea made from agrimony is excellent for respiratory diseases and gallbladder conditions, relaxes the nervous system, and improves appetite. It also relieves cramps and diarrhea, and regulates heart rhythm. The infusion helps eliminate intestinal parasites, and its external use has anti-inflammatory effects, for example on festering and poorly healing wounds.
In folk medicine, it is recommended for hemorrhoids, rheumatism, irregular menstruation, and blood purification.
Tea: Pour 1/4 liter of boiling water over 2 teaspoons of dried herb, let steep for 15 minutes, and strain. Drink the lukewarm tea morning and evening, 1 cup each time.
