Paulownia tomentosa - Fortune Tree is a medium-height deciduous tree with an impressive appearance originating from Asia. Traditionally planted when a baby girl is born. Blooms from May to June. The flowers are striking and purple. The large, felted leaves are also remarkable.
Thrives in a sunny location. Frost resistant down to -27°C. After rooting, it blooms in 6-8 years. In shady locations, grow for beautiful foliage. Overwinter the plant indoors at room temperature during the first year until it develops a sufficient root ball. Transplant to its final location when it reaches 20 cm in height. Use a substrate of 1/2 soil and 1/2 peat or compost. Water moderately, avoid waterlogging. Mist the leaves. Fertilize every 14 days directly into the pot, not on the leaves.
Requires a sunny location or partial shade. Direct sunlight is not suitable. Chives are quite demanding when it comes to watering – they must not dry out, but waterlogging is also harmful. Regular trimming benefits the plant. It prevents bolting and promotes regular renewal.
Sow seeds in March or April in a pot with quality soil. Standard garden substrate is suitable. Sow seeds on the surface and cover lightly, water and place in a sunny, warm location to allow germination. Seeds will germinate within 5 days.
Requires humus-rich soil that must be well-draining and moisture-retentive. Ideal is a sandy-loam substrate with higher calcium content.
During the growing season, fertilize plants with complete NPK fertilizer in liquid form every 14 days. Suitable fertilizers include Cererit, Kristalon, or special fertilizers designed for herbs.
In spring, orange-yellow to orange raised pustules form on the leaves and stems of various Allium species. If such pustules appear on your plant, it is onion rust. Protection can be provided by spraying with Saprol New. Plants are occasionally attacked by nematodes; in this case, we recommend planting marigolds or calendula nearby, which repel nematodes.
Harvest the soft chive stems as needed. Do not use stems with flowers. Remove them, as they cause the plant to lose part of its aroma.
