Native to Australia, where it grows as a perennial. In our conditions, however, it is grown as an annual. It reaches a height of 30 – 90 cm. The plant produces around 25 flowers in a wide variety of colours. It blooms from July to September. The basic flower colour is yellow, transitioning to shades of brown. New dwarf varieties in white and yellow have also been bred.
They can be excellently dried and then used to create beautiful arrangements. From strawflowers, you can create All Saints' Day decorations, home decorations, various wreaths, and bouquets. This little flower will bring you joy even beyond the flowerbed. Once dried, the flowers retain their colour and shape for several years.
Plants require a warm and sunny location. Partial shade is not suitable. The soil should be kept consistently moist. Drying out results in yellowing leaves. Regularly remove spent flowers to support continuous blooming.
Seeds can be sown from mid-April directly in the selected garden location. Plants will then bloom later. If you want to achieve earlier flowering, it is better to pre-grow seedlings in a greenhouse or cold frame. At room temperature, seeds germinate within ten days. Plants can then be pricked out. Ordinary potting substrate is sufficient for planting.
Plants prefer well-drained sandy soil.
Plants do not require regular fertilisation.
Plants should be protected from heavy rain or waterlogging. During prolonged moisture (on leaves or soil), plants are susceptible to fungal diseases. Aphids or whiteflies may also appear. In these cases, treat plants with special fungicides and insecticides.
Strawflower blooms should be cut while still in full colour when the flower is still closed. Flowers harvested later will over-bloom during drying. Bunches of plants should be dried hanging in a dark and airy room.
