Elegant chrysanthemum flowers should definitely not be missing from your flower beds. They also stand out beautifully in pots. Commonly known as painted daisies or tricolor chrysanthemums, this is a perennial herb growing 20-100 cm tall. A basal rosette of leaves grows from a horizontal or obliquely growing rhizome. The flower is a composite head that can be single or double. It blooms from May to October.

Many cultivars have been bred. Previously, the genus Leucanthemum was classified under the genus Chrysanthemum. The plants are suitable for cutting. The vast majority of species are frost-hardy.

Chrysanthemum carinatum has its home in northwest Africa. The plant is branched, growing 50 to 80 cm tall. It has delicate green leaves. The flowers display white, yellow or variegated colors with a dark disc. They are 5-6 cm wide. It blooms from July to September.

How to Grow Chrysanthemums

• They require a sunny or partially shaded location. The soil should be constantly slightly moist. In winter, it's advisable to cover the bed with conifer branches and divide and replant the plants every second or third year.

• Sow seeds directly in the location from April to May. Plant the germinated plants according to the variety at a spacing of 20 x 30 cm.

• The soil should be loamy, slightly moist and above all supplied with lime and nutrients.

• If there is not enough lime in the soil, it's important to work lime into the soil every year. Plants can be fertilized in spring with well-matured compost. It's possible to apply complete NPK fertilizer - Cererit, Kristalon, which is water-soluble, every 14 days.

• Plants may be attacked by aphids. Use suitable protective products, e.g. Mospilan.
