Mimulus tigrinus

Native to North America, Australia, as well as East Asia and South Africa. There are approximately 150 species. Plants have a bushy growth habit, reaching up to 40 cm in height, climbing. The pointed, shallowly toothed leaves are bright green. The plant produces 100 to 150 flowers. Its flowers come in various colors, most commonly red and orange. It blooms from July to September.

Monkey flower most commonly appears in containers on terraces and balconies. It can also be planted in the garden in beds!

How to Grow Monkey Flower

  • The plant prefers a sunny location, it also tolerates partial shade. The plant needs regular watering. It does not tolerate drought well. Pinching young plants promotes faster branching. Removing spent flowers will encourage further blooming. In winter, move the plants to a cool, bright room at 8°-12°C, where they will overwinter until spring. Reduce watering.

  • Sow seeds in early April in a coldframe or in boxes in a greenhouse. They do not need to be covered, just lightly press them down. They germinate within 1 – 2 weeks. Plant seedlings in their final location in mid-May at a distance of 25 – 30 cm.

  • Clay-sandy humus-rich soil is suitable.

  • The plant needs to be fertilized every 14 days with a special fertilizer for flowering plants. Water-soluble fertilizers such as Cererit or Kristalon are suitable.

  • The plant suffers from aphids. Affected plants should be treated with, for example, Mospilan.
