Originally from the regions of southeastern Africa, Madagascar, areas from India to Nepal and China. These are perennial herbs with a basal rosette of leaves. They grow up to 30 cm in height. Composite or simple flowers have a wide range of colors such as yellow, orange, red, pink, white. They bloom from May to August. Growing gerberas is relatively simple. We can even grow them at home in a pot!
In summer, they prefer a sunny and warm location in a well-ventilated greenhouse, indoors by a window or on a balcony. Summering outdoors is also beneficial. The substrate should be kept constantly slightly moist. Remove dead leaves and spent flowers. For successful overwintering and flower formation, they need a bright location with temperatures around 10°C. Water once a week and do not fertilize. Repot the plants every two years.
Seeds are sown in spring into sowing substrate and left to germinate for 14 days. During this period, maintain the temperature between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius.
Plants prefer a mixture of compost soil, peat and perlite in a ratio of 4:2:1 with added limestone. The resulting pH should be around 5-6.5. Before planting, first sterilize the soil (microwave) or boil it. Create proper drainage at the bottom of the pot using gravel, expanded clay or shards from clay pots.
Apply fertilizer once every 14 days. Choose one specially designed for gerberas or for flowering indoor plants.
Plants are often attacked by fungi, molds, spider mites, aphids, and thrips. Treat them with specialized insecticides and fungicides.
