Cobaea scandens

Cobaea is a climbing annual plant. In our conditions, we grow it as an annual, but in its homeland (South America, Mexico) it is a perennial plant reaching up to 20 meters in height. Here it grows 3-5 meters tall. It has pinnate leaves. It most commonly flowers in purple-violet. The flowers can also be red, blue, purple or white. Initially they have a greenish color and gradually develop their full color. It is suitable for use on pergolas, gazebos and fences, where it quickly creates a dense, compact growth and visual screen.

How to grow Cobaea

• Plants require a sunny location. The location should be protected from wind. If we pinch the plant, it will increase flower formation and become bushier. It requires abundant watering. Overwintering is ineffective in our conditions - it only overwinters in warm, heated greenhouses or winter gardens.

• Sow seeds in February or March, shallowly, by pressing into moist substrate. A substrate suitable for sowing and propagation is appropriate. Seeds will germinate at a temperature around 22 - 24°C in about three weeks. Plant grown seedlings in their final location at the end of May.

• It requires nutritious and well-draining soil.

• Apply fertilizer every two weeks. Suitable is a fertilizer for flowers or leaves - e.g. Kristalon, Cererit.

• The plant may be attacked by aphids or powdery mildew. Treat with suitable insecticides and fungicides.
