A cultivated variety of coffee plant that grows better indoors and reaches a smaller height! It is undemanding in terms of climate and light and is among popular houseplants. It is a shrub or small tree with large leaves and small white flowers. The flowers develop into green coffee berries that later turn red. The plant produces real coffee beans! Unlike the regular arabica coffee plant, it grows to a maximum height of 1.5 meters.
Grow the plant indoors year-round at temperatures ranging from 18-25°C in a location with diffused light, preferably near a window. It tolerates dry air but dislikes drafts, and direct light will burn it. Coffee plants are sensitive to drying out, so water regularly but avoid overwatering. In summer it tolerates more watering, which should be slightly reduced in winter. Water with settled, soft water. Older plants can be pruned and longer branches pinched back to thicken the crown.
Sow seeds in special substrate intended for sowing. Cover them with substrate. Cover the container with foil to ensure sufficient warmth. Optimal is a stable temperature around 25-28°C. Seeds germinate in 2-3 weeks. When seedlings have two leaves, transplant them into individual pots.
Well-draining garden soil rich in nutrients is suitable. Plant in garden substrate (peat + humus + sand) with pH around 4-5. The container should have drainage at the bottom.
During the growing season, apply liquid fertilizers every 14 days. Fertilizer for ornamental foliage houseplants is suitable.
Coffee plants suffer from similar pests as citrus plants, but to a lesser extent. Dry air may cause scale insects or aphids to appear. Treat with special products. Changes in leaf color, browning, or wilting may be caused by nutrient or watering deficiencies.
