A tree yucca with fresh green rigid leaves. Sometimes they stand out with a silvery tint. Native to the southwestern United States.
It has a relatively thin trunk, which in nature is covered with dry leaves. These form an insulating bale. It is very hardy and its occurrence has been confirmed at altitudes up to 1400 m above sea level. It grows to a height of 4m. After flowering, the top divides into 2 or more branches, thus creating a relatively massive crown.
Plants require diffused and direct sunlight and regular but moderate watering. The substrate should remain slightly moist at all times. During summer months, we move plants outdoors to the terrace. They don't tolerate rain or drafts! In winter, we relocate plants to a cool location. We don't apply fertilizers and reduce watering. If the air is dry indoors, we mist the plants with settled water.
Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing. A suitable sowing substrate is a mix of peat and sand 1:1. Press seeds in gently. Keep the substrate constantly slightly moist. Place seedlings in a bright location - diffused light, protect from direct sunlight. The optimal temperature for germination is between 20 - 30°C.
It is suitable to grow plants in special peat substrate designed specifically for palms.
From February to November, apply complete fertilizer at least twice a month, preferably water-soluble. We can also use palm fertilizer.
Viral spotting manifests as yellow-spotted leaves. Remove affected leaves and treat the plant against aphids, which transmit this viral disease.
Irregularly distributed spots that begin to merge signal leaf spot. Remove affected leaves and monitor air humidity.
Gray mold manifests as a green moldy coating on leaves. Remove affected leaves and treat plants with fungicide.
Mealybugs and scale insects can be recognized by translucent leaf tissue; under a magnifying glass, whitish cylindrical mealybugs are visible, and on heavily infested leaves, edges also turn brown. Remove heavily infested parts, mist or shower the plant from time to time. It can be treated with mineral oil-based products.
If we discover scale on the plant, remove heavily infested leaves. Carefully treat leaves with a cotton swab soaked in edible oil and repeatedly treat with mineral oil-based spray.
If parts of leaves discolor unevenly to white-yellow, especially on the underside of leaves, the plant was infested with thrips. Prevention against their occurrence is misting and lowering room temperature. Sticky traps serve for catching them.
