Magnolia champaca

An evergreen tree from the magnolia family growing in South and Southeast Asia, where it is cultivated mainly for its white or salmon-colored, strongly fragrant flowers. These can be up to 25 cm wide. It is used not only in cosmetics (perfumes, creams), but is also grown for its wood. Its seeds are a delicacy for birds. Its essential oil is often referred to as white jade magnolia and is used to create the most luxurious and expensive perfumes for joy and pleasure. Due to its fragrance, this plant is placed in containers with water in rooms and used as a scented decoration. It also serves as decoration for wedding beds and wreaths. In our conditions, it is grown as an undemanding houseplant that can be summered on a terrace or in a garden.

How to Grow Magnolia

• Requires locations with partial shade or direct sunlight. The soil should never dry out, especially if we grow the plant in a container. Do not plant near concrete surfaces or asphalt roads, as radiant heat is harmful to it. Young plants need to be protected from freezing (for example, using leaves or straw). The plant thrives best at temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius. It is not frost-resistant. In summer on warm days, it can be summered on a terrace or in a garden.

• Place the seeds in a refrigerator for 1 month to perform so-called cold stratification. Seeds prepared this way are ready for sowing. Press the seeds 1-2 cm deep into the substrate. A special substrate for sowing and propagation is suitable. Place the pot with the plant in a bright location with a temperature of 22-26 degrees. Germination usually takes 4-6 weeks.

• The soil should be permeable, enriched with peat and compost. Waterlogged environment is unsuitable, as roots will rot in it.

• Fertilize magnolia from spring to autumn every 14 days. Water-soluble complete NPK fertilizer is suitable. We can also reduce the fertilizer dose to 1/4 of the full dose and fertilize the plants with every watering.

• Since this magnolia species cannot be grown in our conditions, but only in warm greenhouses, plants are often attacked by aphids, spider mites or thrips. Treat affected plants with suitable insecticides.
