A yucca originating from high-altitude regions of the USA and Mexico. This is a very attractive and decorative plant. This tree yucca grows up to 4 m in height. It forms a dense bluish crown and blooms with white flowers. It is also very frost-resistant, with frost tolerance down to -23°C.
Plants require both diffused and direct sunlight and regular but moderate watering. The substrate should remain slightly moist at all times. During summer months, we place the plants outdoors on the terrace. They cannot tolerate rain or drafts! In winter, we move the plants to a cool location. We do not apply fertilizers and reduce watering. If the indoor air is dry, we mist the plants with settled water.
Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing. A suitable sowing substrate is a 1:1 mix of peat and sand. Press seeds in gently. Keep the substrate slightly moist at all times. Place seedlings in a bright location - diffused light, protect from direct sunlight. The optimal temperature for germination is between 20 - 30°C.
It is suitable to grow plants in special peat substrate designed specifically for palms.
From February to November, apply complete fertilizer at least twice a month, preferably water-soluble. Palm fertilizer can also be used.
Viral spotting manifests as yellow-spotted leaves. Remove affected leaves and treat the plant against aphids, which transmit this viral disease.
Irregularly distributed spots that begin to merge indicate leaf spot disease. Remove affected leaves and monitor air humidity.
Grey mold manifests as a green moldy coating on leaves. Remove affected leaves and treat plants with fungicide.
Mealybugs and scale insects can be identified by translucent leaf tissue; under a magnifying glass, whitish cylindrical mealybugs are visible, and on heavily infested leaves, edges turn brown. Remove heavily infested parts, mist or shower the plant from time to time. It can be treated with mineral oil-based products.
If we discover scale insects on the plant, remove heavily infested leaves. Carefully treat leaves with a cotton swab soaked in edible oil and repeatedly treat with mineral oil-based sprays.
If parts of leaves become unevenly colored white-yellow, especially on the underside of leaves, the plant has been attacked by thrips. Prevention against their occurrence includes misting and lowering room temperature. Sticky traps serve to capture them.
