Paraguayan holly, also known as maté, originates from South America, particularly from the regions of Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. It is renowned for its leaves, from which the maté beverage is made. The preparation and consumption of maté is a common tradition in the South American region and holds deep social and cultural significance. Thanks to its stimulating properties, it is gaining popularity in other parts of the world, especially among people looking for an alternative to tea or coffee.

Paraguayan holly is a medium-sized tree with a dense and compact crown. It reaches an average height of around 5 to 15 meters, but in the wild it can grow even taller. The leaves of Paraguayan holly are evergreen, oval-shaped with a rounded blade and finely serrated edges. It produces small white flowers that are inconspicuous and have five-petaled blooms. The flowers often grow in clusters. After pollination, fruits develop which are small, round, red berries approximately 4 to 6 mm in diameter. The berries are edible and have a bitter taste. Traditionally, however, dried leaves are primarily used for making maté beverage. Overall, the holly is an elegant plant with dark green leaves and a compact crown, giving it an aesthetic appearance.

1. Seed Preparation: it is recommended to soak the seeds overnight in water to accelerate the germination process.
2. Substrate Preparation: prepare a suitable substrate for seed germination. A mixture of peat, perlite, and sand is recommended, which ensures good drainage.
3. Seed Germination: plant the seeds approximately 1 cm deep into the soil. Ensure the soil remains constantly moist, but do not overwater to prevent the seeds from rotting. Germination may take several weeks to months, so be patient.
4. Seedling Growth: after the seeds germinate and seedlings emerge, provide them with sufficient light, ideally in a slightly shaded location. Once the seedlings strengthen, gradually increase the amount of light.
5. Seedling Care: keep the soil sufficiently moist, but do not overwater. If necessary, you can use a weak fertilizer solution suitable for young seedlings.
6. Transplanting to Larger Pots: once the seedlings have grown, transplant them into larger pots with a suitable soil mix for mature plants.
7. Transplanting to the Garden: if the climate is similar to the natural climate of Paraguayan holly, you can transplant the plant outdoors. Choose a location where sun and partial shade alternate, and keep the soil well-watered.
8. Frost Protection: if you are growing Paraguayan holly in an area with a cooler climate, remember that this species is sensitive to frost. During winter, ensure the plants are protected from extreme temperatures.
