Shrubby plant naturally occurring in the United States. It resembles horsetails. The Ephedra genus is known for the alkaloid ephedrine, which has an adrenaline-like effect.
The plant should only be used on the advice of a doctor or after consultation with a pharmacist or other specialist. Some herbal preparations from joint fir are known as Mormon tea.
Plants require bright and sunny location. In winter, plants do not survive outdoors in our conditions. In warm weather, young plants can be moved to the garden, but the plant is not frost-resistant, so it must be overwintered indoors.
Sow seeds in loamy-sandy substrate. Place seedlings in a warm and sunny location and keep the substrate constantly moist. The suitable temperature for germination is around 20°C.
Soil should be dry, permeable, stony, sandy or gravelly.
Plants do not need fertilizing.
Plants do not suffer from pests and diseases.
