Black Mulberry: Plant Appearance Description

Black mulberry is a medium-sized tree that reaches a height of 10 to 12 meters. It has a spreading crown with broadly oval, dark green leaves. The leaves are simple, alternately arranged and have a smooth surface. The tree is deciduous, which means that the leaves turn yellow to red in autumn and then fall off. Black mulberry is a monoecious tree, meaning that male and female flowers occur separately on the same tree. The fruits of black mulberry are small berries with dark purple to black skin and sweet juicy flesh.

How to Grow Mulberry?

1. Seed Stratification: Mulberry seeds are dormant and require stratification, which imitates winter climatic conditions. Place the seeds in a moist environment, such as moist sand or damp cloth, and store them in a cool place, such as a refrigerator, for approximately 6 to 8 weeks.

2. Soil Preparation: Prepare a pot or container with well-draining nutrient-rich soil. A mixture of exotic soil, peat, and sand is suitable for mulberry seedlings.

3. Planting Seeds: Place the stratified seeds into the soil to a depth of about 1 to 2 cm. Make sure the seeds are well covered and press the substrate around them.

4. Temperature and Humidity: Keep the pot or container in a warm and bright place with a temperature around 20-25°C. Make sure the soil is constantly moist but not waterlogged.

5. Seed Germination: Seed germination can take several weeks to months. After germination, keep the seedlings in a bright place, but protect them from direct sunlight.

6. Seedling Care: Once the seedlings appear, gradually acclimate them to more sunlight. Water regularly to keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering.

7. Transplanting Outdoors: Once the root system is strong enough, you can transplant the seedlings outdoors to a sunny location. Make sure they have enough space to grow.
