Common butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris) is a small carnivorous plant that can enhance not only a collection for lovers of insectivorous species, but also a natural garden. For proper growth, it needs nutrient-rich soil, constant moisture, sunny to partially shaded location, and generous watering. Nevertheless, it is undemanding and, with the right conditions, will reward the grower with beautiful flowers and useful control of small insects.
Common Butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris) is a delicate carnivorous plant that can enrich not only collections of insectivorous plant enthusiasts, but also a natural garden. For proper growth, it requires nutrient-rich soil, constant moisture, sunny to semi-shaded location, and generous watering. Nevertheless, it's undemanding and with the right conditions will reward the grower with beautiful flowers and useful control of small insects.
🌿 Characteristics of Butterwort
Butterwort is a low-growing perennial herb with a rosette of smooth, sticky leaves. It's precisely on their surface that small insects are trapped, which the plant feeds on – this is a carnivorous method of nutrition. It flowers from May to August with small purple blooms that give the plant an ornamental appearance.
It is protected in the wild, but commonly available in cultivated forms.
☀️ Location and Soil
Butterwort thrives in a sunny to semi-shaded location, with sufficient light but without direct summer heat. The soil should be nutrient-rich, loose and moist, ideally slightly acidic.
💧 Watering, Humidity and Growing
Butterwort requires generous and regular watering – the soil should be constantly moist. Growing in a saucer with water or in a closed mini-greenhouse where higher air humidity is maintained is ideal.
💡 When growing in a pot, never water from above, but into the saucer. Use preferably soft or rainwater.
🌱 Propagation and Care
Sundew propagates by dividing rosettes or seeds. In autumn, part of the plant dies back – it's advisable to move it to a cooler but bright space where it overwinters.
When growing indoors, protect it from drafts and dry conditions. It doesn't need fertilizer – it gets nutrients from caught insects.
