Growing Sandalwood - Humus-Rich Permeable Substrate, Sunny Location, Abundant Watering, Moisture and Warmth

Optimal Conditions for Growing Sandalwood

Sandalwood (Santalum) is an exotic plant known for its aromatic wood and essential oils. Successful cultivation requires creating specific growing conditions that mimic its natural tropical and subtropical environment.

Substrate Requirements

Sandalwood thrives in a humus-rich, well-draining substrate that allows proper root development and prevents waterlogging. The ideal growing medium should contain:

  • Quality garden soil mixed with compost
  • Perlite or sand for improved drainage
  • Organic matter for nutrient retention
  • pH level between 6.0-7.5

Light and Location

Choose a sunny location where the plant receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Sandalwood requires abundant light for proper growth and development of its aromatic compounds.

Watering and Humidity

Provide abundant watering while maintaining good drainage. The substrate should remain consistently moist but never waterlogged. Sandalwood prefers:

  • Regular watering during growing season
  • High humidity levels (60-80%)
  • Misting during dry periods
  • Reduced watering in winter months

Temperature Requirements

Sandalwood requires warm conditions year-round. Optimal temperature range is 20-30°C. Protect plants from frost and cold drafts, as they are sensitive to temperatures below 15°C.

Sandalwood can grow as a 1 m tall shrub or even as a 25 m tall tree. However, it is usually of smaller stature. The branches are drooping. It has 4-12 cm long, grey-green, leathery and entire leaves. Young leaves are usually tinged purple or orange. Four-petaled flowers grow in axillary cymes. They are delicately fragrant and have a bell-like shape. The buds are yellowish to red in colour. The fruit is an oval, fleshy drupe with a ring at the apex. It contains one seed and when ripe has a purple-red to black colour.

Occurrence

It often grows on ridges and slopes. It is thermophilic, requires humus-rich well-drained soil and high air humidity. It is quite a demanding plant.

Uses

Sandalwood (white or red) is hard, has a fine texture and high content of aromatic oils. It has a yellow colour. It is used in carpentry and wood carving.

White wood: used in aromatherapy. Its scent has antidepressant effects, supports the work of the heart muscle, treats inflammation of mucous membranes, bladder and intestinal problems.

Red wood: best supports metabolism. It also acts as an antirheumatic.

From fresh wood, oil can be obtained for use in perfumes and is a component of incense and medicines. Incense sticks are made from it, which can deepen both concentration and relaxation. Sandalwood oil has a strong disinfectant effect. It is among the substances that stimulate the performance of the immune system. It can also be rubbed into the throat, which relieves inflamed vocal cords.

It belongs to the sandalwood family (Santalaceae).
