Growing Blueberries - Acidic Well-Draining Substrate, Sunny Location, Generous Watering
Blueberries are popular fruit bushes that reward growers with delicious and healthy berries. However, successful cultivation requires meeting their specific requirements - particularly regarding soil pH and moisture.
Acidic and Well-Draining Substrate
The most important condition for growing blueberries is acidic soil with pH 4.5-5.5. In alkaline or neutral soils, plants suffer from chlorosis and fail to thrive. Use specialized substrates for acid-loving plants or prepare a mixture of:
- Peat moss
- Pine bark
- Coarse sand
- Composted pine needles
The substrate must be well-draining yet moisture-retentive. Waterlogging damages roots, while excessive drying stresses the plant.
Sunny to Partially Shaded Location
Blueberries prefer sunny to partially shaded locations. In full sun, they produce larger and sweeter berries, though they also tolerate light shade. Protect them from strong winds that dry out soil and damage branches.
Generous and Regular Watering
Blueberries have shallow root systems and require consistently moist soil. Water regularly, especially during fruit development and hot weather. Use soft water or rainwater - hard tap water increases soil pH. Mulching with pine bark or needles helps retain moisture and maintain acidity.
Additional Care Tips
- Fertilizing: Use specialized fertilizers for acid-loving plants
- Pruning: Remove old and damaged branches in early spring
- Mulching: Apply 5-10 cm layer of acidic mulch
- Frost protection: Cover early-blooming varieties during spring frosts
With proper care, blueberries will reward you with abundant harvests of tasty fruit for many years.
BLUEBERRY
Blueberry from the Ericaceae family forms a 15 to 40 cm tall shrub, densely branched with a creeping rhizome and upright leaves. The fruits are round, juicy, blue-black berries. Blueberries have a sweet-sour taste and their pulp stains well. Blueberries stick together easily - high sugar content. They must not get wet, otherwise they quickly become moldy and are not edible.
It grows naturally especially in sparse coniferous forests, heathlands and peatlands. It grows particularly in high-altitude areas. Blueberry requires acidic, humus-rich soil that does not dry out.
Blueberry leaves and fruits contain drugs - Folium and Fructus, which are light green, with a bitter astringent taste. The leaves and fruits are quickly dried to retain as many active substances as possible, which serve to reduce blood sugar, against diarrhea, intestinal catarrh or for inflammation. Blueberries are especially effective for inflammations in the mouth!
Blueberries also contain many tannins, pectin, organic acids, vitamin C and also natural dyes.
Fresh blueberries, syrup or wine are used.
