Yucca - Garden Ornament
Yucca (lat. Yucca) - is a representative of the asparagus family (lat. Asparagaceae) and the agave subfamily (lat. Agavoideae). Yucca originates from America, from the southern part of the USA and Mexico. In nature, approximately 30-40 species of Yucca grow and are cultivated. Some Yucca species may resemble palms in appearance. Yuccas are frost-resistant, which is why they are grown all over the world. Try growing one in your garden as well. Choose the species that you like the most, has the most beautiful flowers or shape.
Yuccas are either ground-level rosettes or have a tree-like form. Yucca flowers have white, cream or waxy white colour. Some species also have light green or purple flowers. The flowers grow in clusters or panicles. They consist of 6 tepals. Yucca leaves are sword-shaped, with serrated edges. The fruit of Yucca is a capsule or berry.
Yucca Filamentosa
The most commonly cultivated, and the one I would recommend, is Yucca Filamentosa. Seeds of this Yucca are available to order in our e-shop. It has a rosette growth habit and magnificent flowers.
TIP: It will be a decoration for every house entrance or seating area corner. It is also suitable as a specimen plant. It contrasts beautifully with a green garden. With a living hedge of conifers or thujas. Also suitable for corners with conifers.
Yucca filamentosa - Adam's Needle - you may also know it as White Yucca, is a very easy plant to grow. It grows very quickly.
Choose a sunny location for it. In a sunny location, it produces flowers earlier than in partial shade. The soil should be sandy, well-drained. You can surround the Yucca with pebbles. If you grow Yucca in a pot, don't forget adequate drainage.
The flowers of Yucca filamentosa grow in panicles on a tall stem. The flowers are at a height of approximately 1m. In the wild, the inflorescence reaches up to 3m in height. The flowers have a bell-shaped form and creamy white colour. The leaves of the yucca are blue-green, 30-70cm long. Yucca filamentosa has ground-level growth, forming clumps without a trunk.
Watering Yucca should be adequate, especially during periods of extreme drought, but don't overwater it unnecessarily. A freely planted Yucca will manage with rainwater. To prevent the soil from drying out, you can cover the soil surface around the yucca with pebbles. Pebbles prevent drying out and are also aesthetically pleasing (decorative).
Fertilising is recommended in spring - with liquid fertiliser for yuccas and palms. It will support flower formation.
Yucca filamentosa is frost-resistant. It withstands frosts down to -30°C. Therefore, there is no need to overwinter it. Before winter, reduce fertilization so that the plant tissue has time to mature and the yucca has greater resistance during the winter months. If you still want to, you can cover it with branches/conifer twigs.
Yucca filamentosa has slightly poisonous roots (due to the content of saponins - blood toxins that disrupt red blood cells). The flower petals are edible. Ensure safety, especially around curious children.
Yucca rostrata
Yucca rostrata is a tree-forming yucca species. It is undemanding to grow. It belongs among species that love drought. It has slower growth. It reaches heights of up to 4m. It has blue-green leaves and a very branched crown, which forms up to 5 branches. The leaves have a sharp tip. Young plants are frost-resistant down to -18°C and older plants down to -25°C. Yucca rostrata blooms white. The flowers are on 60 cm panicles.
Choose a sunny location for it. The longer and warmer the sun rays, the more Yucca rostrata will thrive. This Yucca is very suitable for growing in a pot. Place it on a south-facing windowsill. It is exotic and will enliven your interior.
Recommendation: Yuccas grown in pots are frost-resistant only down to 5°C. Overwinter these plants appropriately.
Yucca rigida
Yucca rigida belongs among the rarer yucca species. It is very attractive. It has tree-like growth. It will captivate every admirer. It can grow up to 4m in height. The crown can branch up to 3 times. It comes from Southern Mexico. It is frost-resistant down to -16°C. The leaves have a silvery tint. The flowers are white.
Yucca thompsoniana
Yucca thompsoniana also belongs among the tree-growing yucca species. It comes from the southwestern part of the USA. It grows at an altitude of around 1400 m above sea level. The trunk is covered with dried leaves. This forms a natural covering. The trunk of this yucca is thin. The plant is frost-resistant down to -25°C. This Yucca grows to a height of around 4 meters. It has bright green leaves with a silvery tint. The flowers are spreading, vanilla white. After flowering, the yucca's crown divides and over time the "tree" becomes more massive and gains in spread.
Thompson's Yucca needs a sunny location and well-drained soil for good growth. Before winter, we recommend covering this Yucca - it's enough to place it under a shelter or create an artificial roof for it.
Have you chosen the Yucca that suits your garden best? You'll be satisfied. Yucca will add a touch of exotic beauty to your garden. It's not demanding to grow. Will you be thrilled?
