Climbing morning glory will beautifully decorate your gazebo - the best choice - bell-shaped blue flowers climb up to 4m in length from July until the first frosts...
Climbing Cobaea Will Decorate Your Gazebo
Cobaea scandens (lat. Cobaea scandens) - a climbing plant reaching heights of up to 4m. It belongs to the phlox family (lat. Polemoniaceae). Its origin is in Mexico, where it reaches lengths of up to 30m. It thrives in sunny locations, protected from wind. It is suitable for growing in containers.
Cobaea blooms very reliably and abundantly. The flowers are bell-shaped, initially white, gradually turning blue. Cultivated varieties also bloom in white, purple, blue and red. Flowers are guaranteed from July until the first frosts. These are entire clusters of flowers. Cobaea fruits rarely develop in our conditions. In optimal conditions, they are 5-7 cm long and have an ovate shape. The leaves are initially tinged red, gradually turning green as they develop.
Cobaea is a beautiful climbing plant. It is not yet very widespread here, so you won't see this decoration at every neighbour's house. It climbs well even on roughly rendered walls. It has very fast growth. We recommend trying it out. You will be delighted by its rapid growth and flood of flowers.
Cobaea thrives in containers. You can move it to your pergola or gazebo, and it will very quickly reach its declared length.
This plant is grown here as an annual. In our conditions it won't survive overwintering. Overwintering may succeed in a warmer conservatory attached to the house.
Growing Cobaea
Cobaea is sown in February to March. We recommend sowing at least 2 months in advance. The optimal temperature for germination is 22-24°C. Cobaea can be germinated in seed trays. From there we transplant them later, either directly into the soil or into a container. Always use substrate intended for sowing. The substrate can be heated in the microwave to neutralise fungal and mould spores.
Cobaea seeds are simply placed on moistened substrate and gently pressed down. The surface is moistened with a spray bottle. Seeds germinate in 2-4 weeks. We transplant or place cobaea in prepared containers in outdoor locations in the second half of May.
If you pre-grow cobaea in a cold frame or greenhouse, do so no earlier than March. These spaces should have a temperature around 18°C.
If we grow cobaea in a container, we also prepare matured compost, which we place on the drainage layer in the container. A drainage layer of sand or gravel is important. Cobaea thrives in nutritious but well-drained soils. Substrate intended for growing cobaea in containers can be lightly mixed with sand to aerate and lighten the soil.
Cobaea prefers a sunny location. Sheltered from wind. The sunnier the spot, the more flowers it will produce. It thrives in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Work a generous amount of compost into the soil in autumn where you plan to plant it. If you're digging out part of the soil (a hole) near your gazebo, replace this section with soil mixed with sand for the cobaea.
If you have a lower pergola, or want to grow it against a retaining wall, etc., you can pinch back the tips of the cobaea. Pinching causes it to branch out and form a bushier plant.
Feed cobaea regularly, every two weeks with a flowering or foliage fertilizer. Fertilizer is also essential when growing in containers, where nutrients deplete very quickly.
Cobaea is a relatively reliable plant health-wise. Aphids may occasionally attack it. Control them in the usual way.
Overwintering cobaea is possible. In conservatories, even the last flowers will bloom through.
However, cobaea won't survive regular outdoor overwintering and needs to be planted again the following year. It grows very quickly. That's a major advantage.
How to choose the most suitable container? The larger your gazebo or pergola, the larger the container should be for growing cobaea - to give the plant space for the largest possible root system. In small containers it will be weak, even with adequate fertilizing. You can even use an old barrel as a container. You can grow 3 plants in it, planted in groups of 3 next to each other.
Cobaea is very resistant to rain. Suitable for pergolas, retaining walls and fences. It's ideal for covering less attractive garden structures, gates and entrances.
Cobaea requires generous feeding. If you're not a fan of industrial fertilizers, it will do well with nettle tea and compost amendments.
Cobaea scandens
The most commonly grown species here is Cobaea scandens. Cup and saucer vine. Its name is characteristic. It will climb up any structure. You'll be delighted by its beautiful flower clusters and the speed at which it grows.
Summary:
Pre-growing cobaea takes 2 months, germination itself 2-4 weeks. Choose the sunny side of your pergola and a suitable, large container. Ensure well-drained and nutrient-rich soil. Water regularly, fertilize once every 14 days.
Tip: It's worth inserting a stick next to pre-grown cobaea. It climbs from an early stage. This simple support will help it.
Then your seating area under the magnificent cascade of flowers becomes like a fairy tale...
