Fertilizers for Autumn Garden Care
Each period of the plant vegetation cycle has its specific requirements. Proper soil preparation in autumn will make your work easier in spring and reward you with abundant flowers and fruits from your planted crops.
Fertilizers for Autumn Garden Care
Fertilizers are a kind of alchemy that helps plants grow and produce successfully. If you think autumn fertilizing is unnecessary, you should know that's not the case. After reading this article, you'll definitely change your mind. At the end of summer, you were slowly harvesting crops and stopping the supply of fertilizers to plants. You gradually reduced nitrogen feeding (for rapid growth) and other important elements for growth. However, the soil shouldn't remain fallow over winter. It needs to be properly enriched so it has time to settle and prepare for the next season. Autumn fertilizing is applied to beds, lawns, and trees from late September through October. Be careful when choosing fertilizer so you don't harm your lawn, for example.
After harvest, it's advisable to loosen the soil - dig it up and replenish depleted nutrients. Organic fertilizers are the best way to replenish nutrients. Farmyard manure is suitable, whether horse or cow manure. It can be supplemented with chicken droppings, which you can combine in various ways. Manure is also available in GRANULATED form, making handling cleaner and simpler.
In autumn, avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizers. These promote growth, which is undesirable in this case. Plants wouldn't have time to mature before frost, and young shoots would be damaged by freezing temperatures. They would then be more susceptible to fungal diseases. On the contrary, potassium is important. It helps in the ripening of plant tissues and helps reduce water content in plant tissues, thereby increasing their frost resistance.
Lawns - need an increased dose of potassium for successful overwintering. Potassium helps grass mature and increases resistance to frost damage. Lawn fertilizers are designed for all types of grass. They can also be used for feeding ornamental trees and shrubs. Feed your lawn with autumn fertilizer HORTILON or EXPERT, always following the instructions on the package. Lawns are usually fertilized before winter from September to November.
Conifers - fertilizer designed for autumn feeding of conifers contains Epsom salt, which prevents yellowing and browning of needles. Nutrition for autumn fertilizing HERE.
Trees and shrubs - in autumn, it's necessary to care for the taller representatives of plants in the garden. Use Hoštické NPK autumn fertilizer with guano as autumn fertilizer for trees and shrubs. It's suitable for application to trees and shrubs, also for autumn planting of seedlings.
Fruit trees - we fertilise from mid-October until November. Choose fertilisers containing magnesium. Autumn fertilisation is more effective than spring fertilisation. Fruit trees have high potassium requirements. Potassium deficiency can be recognised when leaf edges turn brown and clearly contrast with the green centres of the leaves. Sometimes entire leaves may turn brown. Potassium deficiency manifests this way in most plants. Magnesium deficiency can be recognised when leaves remain green whilst the veining in the centre of the leaf turns yellow. Phosphorus deficiency can be recognised by reduced frost resistance, the tree has no new shoots, has few flowers and consequently few fruits. Liming is also important for trees. Calcium deficiency causes bitter pit in apple trees and undeveloped shells in walnut trees. Use DOLOMITIC LIMESTONE. Dosage indicated on the package.
Roses, strawberries - compost, which you heap around the plants, works well both as a fertiliser and as protection against the approaching winter.
Container plants - are very sensitive during the winter period. Fertilising will help them get through this time. Crystalline fertilisers that dissolve in water are more suitable for container plants. Plants absorb nutrients more quickly this way.
Did you know that phosphorus is important for lawn fertilisation? Phosphorus has a significant influence on root system development. And do you know why magnesium is important? It takes care of the lawn's green pigment and optimal photosynthesis process.
Fertilise Ecologically
If you don't want to use industrial fertilisers in autumn, try natural ones. Organic fertilisers can also be used for autumn fertilisation. These are types containing GUANO. Organic fertilisers provide long-term nutrition and soil health. Organic fertilisers create soil fertility. They support soil organisms in their activity.
Always store fertilisers in a dry and dark place. Keep out of reach of children! Follow the instructions on the back of the package! In case of injury, always follow the warnings on the back of the package and seek professional help!
