Datura - Hallucinogenic Annual in Many Colors
Jimsonweed (Latin: Datura stramonium) originates from the southern and southeastern parts of North America, from where it has spread to all continents. It thrives particularly in temperate to tropical climates. The fruit of datura is an egg-shaped capsule covered with numerous spines. It flowers from June to September. It was formerly widely used for pharmaceutical purposes. Jimsonweed is a highly poisonous and hallucinogenic plant from the nightshade family.
Datura is a 0.5 to 1 m tall plant. It thrives in most territories worldwide.
Warning:
The entire plant is highly poisonous, containing tropane alkaloids. Datura poisoning is extremely risky. In higher doses, death can occur from complete exhaustion, heart failure, overheating, or fatal injuries may occur under the influence of delirium. Under the influence of this substance, blindness and permanent organ damage can also occur.
Growing Datura
Jimsonweed is also known as angel's trumpet or brugmansia. Despite its toxicity, it has a place in our ornamental gardens. They dazzle with their shape diversity and intoxicating fragrance. Datura and brugmansia are very similar plants. They differ in their flowers - datura has pendulous flowers, whereas brugmansia has flowers pointing straight up. Both brugmansia and datura can be easily grown from seed every year; datura can overwinter.
Jimsonweed can be classically pre-grown from seed in early March. We transplant to outdoor locations in May, after the last frost. Pruning of datura is also carried out in May. Lower leaves fall off - don't be alarmed, the plant is just forming its stem. Datura is an easy plant to grow and will bring joy to everyone, even beginner gardeners.
Jimsonweed can be grown in a sunny location, though it flowers more abundantly in partial shade. Plants require highly nutritious substrates. Datura flowers from June until the first frosts. For abundant flowers, we recommend watering up to 3 times daily in summer. However, don't overwater the plants, but keep them in condition with regular watering. Under no circumstances should plants be waterlogged or left standing in water. If we overwater the plant, let it dry out so the roots don't rot. Once a week, fertilize with a multi-component mineral fertilizer. Fertilize the plant regularly - it's a very vigorous plant that consumes many nutrients for its growth.
Datura is usually grown as an annual plant, but it can overwinter. At the end of summer, bring the potted plant into a cool room where we can keep it for the next season; the room temperature should be approximately 7°C.
Datura is a plant that makes time for you with its flowers. Most plants go to sleep in the evening and close their flowers, whereas datura welcomes you in full beauty even when you return from work in the evening.
