When establishing a lawn, it's important to choose correctly. What, you ask? First and foremost, grass seed. Not only is soil composition crucial, but also the activities your lawn will need to withstand - garden barbecues, children playing, your pets spending time there. The choice is also influenced by factors such as whether it will be exposed to sun or shade.
You can establish a beautiful, continuous green lawn either by sowing seeds (a cheaper but more labor-intensive option) or by laying ready-made turf.
Choosing the Right Seed - The Key to Success
There are many seed options available that differ in quality. Deciding on the right type may not always be simple. When choosing, it's important to know:
-
what the lawn will be used for (whether it will be heavily used or more ornamental)
-
where it will grow (sun - shade, dry - moist)
Attention should be paid to the percentage composition of individual grass species in the mixture. The most common species found in grass seed are bent grass (Agrostis tenuis), fescue (Festuca rubra), meadow grass (Poa pratensis), and ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Today, you can buy seed mixtures precisely tailored to the characteristics of your plot. Available are seeds for establishing luxury lawns and sports lawns, or for shade, sun, or for renovating and overseeding older lawns. Meadow mixtures or ecological lawns with clover are also attractive options. Investing in quality seed definitely pays off. After all, you're not establishing a lawn for just a year or two.
How to Do It?
The most important step is soil preparation. Neglecting it really doesn't pay off! First, you should clear the soil of roots, weeds or trees, and any construction debris and the like. Then dig it over and level the surface - first roughly, and finally rake it into one neat, even plane. Only then can you begin sowing. It's best to establish a new lawn in calm weather, ideally when it's overcast. Seed can be scattered by hand, but it's better to use a spreader. After sowing, work the seed gently into the soil (for example, with a rake), roll the entire area, and water it. The grass will germinate in about a week, but the new lawn needs intensive watering for at least a month - if it doesn't rain and the weather is warm, even three times a day. The time for the first mowing will come in about 8 weeks.
Laying Turf
If you're not among the admirers of slowly but surely growing grass, you can establish a lawn by laying turf. It's more expensive, but it's a faster solution. It's important that you lay the turf immediately after purchase (from proven growers who use cultivated grass varieties specifically intended for this purpose).
The Secret to Success Lies in Soil Preparation
Soil preparation for laying turf does not differ from preparation for sowing grass seed. Thorough weeding (preferably with a quality herbicide), removal of construction or other debris, stones, old stumps, and precise digging or aeration are essential. Heavy soils can be improved with sifted compost and sand. It's also beneficial to spread quality horticultural substrate over the surface. Then rake the surface, remove all clumps, and roll it with a light roller. The soil should settle before laying the turf, otherwise waves and depressions will form. Although it's possible, it's not recommended to prepare the terrain and lay turf on the same day. The opposite extreme is an overly compacted and settled surface. This can cause slower rooting or yellowing of the lawn.
Establishing a Lawn
For establishing a lawn, it's suitable to use a universal grass mix or park mix. These mixes are also suitable for land reclamation and repairs of existing grassy areas. The seeds they contain have very good germination, tolerate high stress and adverse conditions. The lawn regenerates quickly and is resistant to trampling.
If you want to have a beautiful, dense and green lawn, expect that you'll need to care for it almost year-round.
Children's Play, Recreation, Relaxation
For lawns that will be intensively and regularly stressed by children's play, sports and other recreational activities, it's advisable to choose grass mixes resistant to high stress. These are suitable, for example, for establishing sports fields or around swimming pools. For soil aeration, it's recommended to use lawn sand.

For Shade
For lawns shaded by walls, houses or trees, grass seed mixtures designed for extreme conditions or specially mixed grass seed mixtures for this purpose are suitable. The grass mixture is created from seeds that tolerate higher soil moisture and shading.
Shade mixture is designed for establishing grassed areas in places that suffer from lack of light. The mixture is composed of grass species that better tolerate humid environments. Package contains 2 kg.
Shade mixture is prepared from high-quality grass varieties. Compared to other grass mixtures, it is characterized by slightly different growth requirements and does not require direct sunlight for its growth. Package contains 500 g.
For Sunny Areas
For lawns exposed to all-day sunlight, grass seed mixtures designed for extreme conditions or specially mixed grass seed mixtures for this purpose are suitable. The grass mixture is created from seeds that tolerate high temperatures and drought.
Grass mixture for sunny locations is designed for establishing grassed areas in places that are exposed to all-day sunlight. Package: 500 g.
Ornamental Lawn for Family Home
For planting lawns that are not expected to have regular and heavy use from recreational or sports activities, park grass mixtures are designed. The mixtures create a visually attractive dense lawn, which however is not designed for regular and heavy use. The lawn grows more slowly, so frequent mowing is not necessary.
