Pre-Growing Seedlings: The Perfect Time to Start
We're at the turn of January and February, and that means one thing - it's high time to start pre-growing seedlings!
How to Do It?
First of all, think about what you want to plant. Annuals (calendula, aster, fuchsia, petunia) need a longer development period, so we start sowing them earliest (January or February). You can continue sowing until the end of April - which is most suitable for sowing fast-developing plants such as Chinese asters or zinnias.
For pre-growing plants you will need: quality plant seeds, clean and disinfected containers for planting and substrate or fertiliser suitable for spring sowing.
Get It Right from the Start
As mentioned, there are no limits to creativity, so you can prepare plenty of plants for the upcoming season. Think about quality too - by choosing higher quality seeds, you often save yourself a lot of work, because dealing with mildew or aphids on less resistant varieties is often a long-distance race.
We've selected the highest quality material for you - Pinokkio pepper seeds, Midios F1 cucumber, bush beans and Philovita tomato. Chive seeds, which we supply including a lovely planter, are perfect for the youngest gardeners.
Sowing discs have become an innovative gadget in recent years, made from water-soluble film that decomposes over time and contains no harmful substances. The seeds on the disc are evenly distributed, so you don't need to thin them out or space them later. Simply place the disc in pre-prepared soil, about 1-2 cm deep, and you're done.
Save yourself work with a disc containing a mix of three types of pepper seeds, or with a herb mix (marjoram, mint, rosemary). You can choose from many variants, just browse through the entire Sowing Strips section.
We have the seeds, now we need the right substrate. Choose one that consists of coarser particles - they help drain moisture away from the seeds better. PROFÍK Substrate is made from the highest quality mixture of dark and light peat, with adjusted pH and perlite. It also suppresses fungal diseases and one package contains 15 litres of this miraculous mixture. An alternative in a smaller, ten-litre package is the Substrate for Sowing and Propagation.
With fertiliser it works even better and moreover - you can use it all year round, whenever you want to pamper your plants even more. The king of fertilisers Plagron, herb gel or special fertiliser for surfinie - these are liquid fertilisers that work literal miracles. And you'll be pleased to know you don't have to break the bank for them - you can get all of them from us for under 200 crowns.
And how deep should you plant the seeds? It's recommended that the sowing depth should be approximately double the size of the seed.
Bet on Cleanliness
It's very important to place the seeds with the substrate into clean and disinfected containers - this prevents moulds or diseases that may have settled on unwashed pots.
Available are plastic seedling trays in smaller or larger sizes, or peat pots. These are slightly more expensive, but they make it easier to remove weeds and pests. Another advantage is that when transplanting from one place to another, plants don't suffer such a shock. Will you prefer round or square ones?
For true connoisseurs, we have peat pellets - the best solution of all that we mention here. Soak the pellets for 5 minutes in pre-settled water. Then place the soaked pellet into the pot where you want to germinate the seeds. Place the seeds inside and you're done - you won't even get dirty!
Besides pots, you can also use mini propagators. You'll need a bit more space for it (choose a sunny spot, such as a windowsill), but it provides ideal conditions for germination and pre-cultivation. Make sure to ventilate regularly - during the day, let the propagator breathe without the lid, close it at night.
Can't wait for spring to arrive either? For the first snowdrop heads and colorful tulip petals to appear? Let's hope it will be soon!
