Summer Succession Planting: What to Sow in June

When you harvest your radishes, lettuce and other early crops in June, you can immediately start making new sowings. You have plenty of vegetable varieties to choose from that are suitable for June sowing or year-round cultivation, which will grow without problems before autumn arrives.

You've already completed your spring garden work, summer is coming and with it much more time that you'll spend in the garden. And you can start right away with more sowings! June sowings don't fundamentally differ from spring ones. You just need to pay increased attention to sufficient watering. On hot days, soil loses moisture very quickly and germinating seeds could easily dry out.

Sow carrots even in June

Every carrot needs well-worked soil in which its long root can fully develop. Carrots will also grow in compacted beds, but they'll have short or otherwise deformed roots. You can help yourself by growing on ridges. Sufficient nutrients and moisture are also important, definitely don't underestimate watering. After emergence, thin out the plants, which will ensure a richer harvest. From our range, try for example the semi-early variety Sylva or the non-traditional round carrot Rondo, which you can sow until July.

Delicious legumes: Bush beans and peas

Lovers of green peas can grow this delicacy all year round, you can sow them until the beginning of August. Popular varieties of marrowfat peas include, for example, Kelvedon Wonder, and among sugar peas, the Ambrosia variety has proven successful.

Bush beans for harvesting whole pods are relatively undemanding crops. Compared to climbing varieties, they have a shorter growing season, making them more suitable for later sowings. When they're not being nibbled by slugs, they usually don't suffer from any diseases. Since all pods from one sowing ripen simultaneously, it's better to spread the sowing gradually until mid-July to extend the harvest period. You can choose varieties of different colours from green (e.g. Saxa) through purple (e.g. Purple King) to yellow (e.g. Golddukat). An interesting feature are mottled varieties such as the red-white Borlotto lingua di fuoco nano or the green-purple Bobis D'Albenga.

Lettuce and Other Leafy Greens

Among head and leaf lettuces, you'll find many varieties suitable for year-round growing. For June (and later) sowings, choose varieties bred for resistance to bolting. Among head lettuces, consider Adinal, while for leaf types, it's worth trying Dubáček with its characteristically shaped leaves. Other leafy greens suitable for June sowing include rocket and Asian salads.

Beetroot for Every Garden

You can also sow beetroot in June, which despite its longer growing season usually manages to fully mature by autumn. If you want to grow beetroot only for harvesting small bulbs, you needn't worry about June sowing at all. After the seeds germinate, don't forget to thin them out. Beetroot isn't particularly demanding when it comes to watering, but it struggles during prolonged drought and greatly appreciates generous irrigation. The most well-known variety is Red Round.

Crunchy Classics: Radishes

Although the tasty bulbs of radishes belong primarily to the spring season, you can enjoy them all year round. Varieties for year-round cultivation are ideal, such as Lada, Duo, or Granát. However, generous watering and constant soil moisture are essential when growing radishes. Summer varieties of white and black radishes can be sown until July. Try Round Black, white Albaster, or Japanese Giant Radish.
